Can anyone recommend good books about programming, particularly learning programming. I am a beginner, so basics would be most helpful now, but I am also a quick learner and would like to pass the newbie level quickly, so intermediate and advanced readings would also be appreciated.

it nice and wise to start with algorithmic , once you get the logic of algorithm , then you can jump to the language you like to learn ,

find out about what is algorithmic here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algorithm

If you are a beginner then you should learn C first then you can move to other languages like Java, php etc or if you want to learn xhtml then go directly for it.One site good for xhtml is w3c.org

are you interested primarily in creating desktop applications or in web programming? The path you take will depend on this to a large extent.

I would suggest you first get the fundamentals of programming down, then move on to decide what language to start with. You want to make sure you learn good programming habits early on.

This website is hard to read because of the background color and font size, but it has some great information on the fundamentals and more: http://lepslair.com/tutorials/fundamentals/

Web programming. I won't even try to tackle desktop applications just yet.
