what is in your opinion the recommended and maximum title length for a web page? (im asking about the Title meta tag). what are the implications of going over those limits?

    thanks

Going over limit will just mean that google will truncate your title in the serp.

    Hi,

According to the Top contributors in Google Webmaster Central, Title values anything above 60-64 will be truncated in SERP, even though values upto 1129 are indexed.

I would like the meta tag to be short, crisp and enriched with important key words

I heard that recently Google allowed 70 characters for Title tag. But the exact length is 64 character.

There's no specific limits, as to say. Although, for best results, try and keep it around 30-55. :)

Recommended length is - maximum of current page keywords you can put in Title. Keywords out of 60-65 chars will not give you any seo effect, so i do not recommend more then 60 chars.

I would personally not go over 40 also, unless it's very specific niche or long phrase. (at least for homepage)

Do not go over 80 I would say.

What Google and other SEs show in SERP is just a visual issue, they consider your whole title text, but remember that if you have a long title each word gets less relevancy.

Place your most important keywords at the beginning of your title tag.

Yeh, i agree with you allthewebsites, google can index more larger titles than we can see on search results but best use could be make it shorter & worthy to understandable to users & search engines. best use would be 60-65char, but some time google can shows upto 72 chars.

Since search engines not show all Title Tag in their SERPs therefore recommend to keep it up to maximum 8 words in Title Tag.
