Recommendation For Server: Site With Roughly 100k Pageviews Per Month

    Hey guys,

My hosting company recently contacted me and said one of my sites is using too much of the "resources" on the server and they say I should move to a $100 per month for a dedicated server.

I'm getting about 100k pageviews a month...does a $100 per month for a dedicated server sound right for that amount?

    Thank you for your time.

You can get a way better deal than that on a dedicated server, if that's all your requirements are. What are the specs? Are the pages on your site static (HTML only) or dynamic (PHP, MySQL)? You could probably get away with using a decent VPS instead.

    Thanks for the reply!

My site is just a Wordpress site. I'm currently with Site5 who have been good - up to this point...

A VPS will do just fine. If you optimize it enough a 512MB VPS might even do. It's not that bad.

Thanks guys! Do any of you have any suggestions on who to go with? Like I said, I'm currently with Site5 but their suggestion was $100 per month.

Do you know how to setup and manage a Wordpress installation on a VPS? Recommend setting up nginx, some caching (e.g. APC) and then Wordpress.

If you do not have any knowledge of this go with a VPS with management. It wouldn't be $100. Maximum $50 for your needs.

There are many providers who can give you that budget and requirements Mr.81 :) You can also check the offers section on web hosting , there are a lot of choices you can choose from there.

    Thanks the advice guys.

Apparently I'm using 2218.49 Resource Points daily on my current server. Does that still sound like a server at $100 is too much?

    Thanks again!

If you have doubt with normal VPS, you can find hybrid server or semi-dedicated server for your website.
In general both of them with high resources such RAM and CPU allocation. I'd rather concern on network and your database query.

    So I don't necessarily need a VPS?

A hybrid server or semi-dedicated server is essentially the same as a VPS, in different technical terms. They will likely cost you more than a typical VPS, and not likely needed in this instance.

Hmm, okay, thanks for your help.

I'll try to get Site5 to bring the price down that they're suggesting, as I have liked their service so far - I'll say that I've been advised it's too high, hopefully they'll listen, if not, I'll guess I'll have to look elsewhere. I wanted to avoid migrating etc, that was the other thing.

Oh well. Thanks for your help everyone!

If you do end up needing to migrate elsewhere, you can ask your new provider as they'll likely be able to help you with that.
