I'm starting a small home business and am in the market for a shopping cart software that's very easy to use and inexpensive. I use FatCow and we get the basic version of ShopSite, but you can only list 15 products at a time, which isn't enough for me. (BTW, I use Adobe GoLive and I am NOT a web expert...although I've designed a few simple sites).

Do any of you have a recommendation? I am looking for basic - bells and whistles aren't important, but ease of use, reliability and cost are. It's a VERY small home business, so the cost of the shopping cart can't outweigh my profits.

Actinic is a very good UK product + hosting service

It's actually a full offline program as well, expensive but a very nice piece of kit

Magento is a great program - but it depends on your hosting. I wouldn't use it with cheap shared hosting as the memory requirements are higher than others like zencart.

Zencart/oscommerce both are pretty nice shopping cart and can be easily installed using fantastico script auto installer with cPanel hosting account.

Another recommendation for X-Cart. It's been easy to make basic changes and a lot of modules are available for more functionality. The forums also offer great support. This is coming from a user with zero experience.

I currently use osCMax. It is a highly modified version of osCommerce. You can download it free at www.osCMax.com but you might want to have some experience when installing this.

search for "presto shopping cart" and there is one other which I can't remember. I like the ajax style incorporated into that script so much, it makes your site prefessional.

I've only tried one so far; and that is X-Cart. It's easy to use and I did not experience any problem with it. I've heard zen cart is nice too.

Right now I use Magento, mostly because it supports multiple stores from one back end. It's pretty new so there are issues, but it has the potential to be a very powerful ecommerce solution.
