What if I have a site with a folder that contains a reciprocal link directory? Is this bad news nowadays or will it still give me a little PR? Thanks, Jon
It gives you PR, just watch what links you´re accepting. Do not accept them all, empirically, I can tell you that maybe 70% of potential link partners are not suitable for a long run. If you´re catching the PR, always check the PR of the very page your link will be put on (means that checking only home page´s PR is not enough)...
I wouldn't do it. I've had linksmanager which is an automated reciprocal link directory and it can definitely lead to penalties in Google because of all the reciprocal linking between unrelated sites and the sheer number of exchanges. If you stick to sites within your theme and don't do too many, you should be fine.
Brian I hope You are kidding Maybe I'm nowbie (1year in SEO) but I don't think that reciprocal links are bad..!!!! maybe reciprocal links have lower power than 1 way or 3 ways links and thats it... but You words did big smile on my face and thank You for it
Personally, I would only accept links into your directory once you have reviewed them. No automatic submissions. Second, only accept quality sites that are related to your sites content. I don't think links pages are bad news today. This last pr update, my links page went from a PR2 to a PR4 so I would say they are still okay. My links page contains all related sites.
I never said that reciprocal links are bad. I said that excessive reciprocal linking is bad (see Matt Cutts' blog if you don't believe me) and reciprocal linking between unrelated sites is usually unnatural and can lead to problems. I don't know what the threshold is but, for my own sites, I wouldn't have more than 20 on 1 link page to theme-related sites. That doesn't mean you can't go way over that and not get any penalty or have multiple pages, that's just my choice.
