Reasons Why Firefox Mozilla Outweighs the Other Web Browsers

Mozilla Firefox is a fast, full-featured browser for Windows that makes browsing more efficient than ever before. Firefox includes pop-up blocking; a tab-browsing mode that lets you open several pages in a single window; integrated Google searching; simplified privacy controls that let you cover your tracks more effectively; a streamlined browser window that shows you more of the page than any other browser; and a number of additional features that work with you to help you get the most out of your time online

All of which Opera has, but lacks the small executable installer download file that Opera posesses. Firefox is also bugger than a maggot-infested garbage can, leaks memory like a seive (how this can be called a "feature" is beyond me - just let go of the memory you're not using so other programs can use it, ok?), has very limited core functionality, and can only do two things out of the box - and Jack left town.

As for the "extensions" why even bother? Most of what Firefox can do "with the extensions" Opera can do RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. The only thing that Firefox has on Opera right now is Firebug - and even then that can be taken care of through Opera's Web developer toolbar.

If that's not enough, you can also use custom buttons and even make your own.

And just because I can, here are some extra goodies (can be found on the main list as well):
    Charge By the Hour
    HTML Post
    PHP Manual

I've never used Opera before. I may try it to see personally how it compares to Firefox.

I've started to use phaseout www.phaseout.net you can search every major search engine at once, its suprisingly fast on loading pages I only have dial up and its like having broadband. It doesnt have any addon's tho which fire fox has but I find firefox to be too slow for me to use.

I will have to try opera also, I have been using FF for a while now.

I didn't even know about the memory leaks.

It blows Firefox out of the water, making Firefox look like what Netscape 4 looked like when compared to Internet Explorer 4 (and later 5). Of course, that was a different day and age.

I've gone back and forth between firefox and opera many times. Right now, Firefox seems to be the better browser. It just doesn't seem to crash as often as Opera, and more websites/applications look and work the way they should.

I hate to burst your bubble but Phaseout is just a psuedo-lucre-browser that sits on top of Internet Explorer's Trident rendering engine. You're still using IE's core, rather than a separate browser.

There are others like this, such as Deepnet Explorer, Avant Browser and Maxthon. Just like Phaseout, they're not separate applications, but psuedo-apps that sit on top of Internet Explorer, using its rendering engine while adding extra functionality (like Deepnet Explorer's P2P feature).

the greatest thing that i like about firefox is first of all there are many good extions and beside that the "restore session" after browser crash is great!
for example you're working with firefox and your computer crashes and you don't have any option but to restart it!before this you were on like 4-5 great sites you found on google! if it was IE you would have to do all the search again but with FF when you launch it again it asks you if you want to restore the same sessions and everything would be like it was before the crash! it works kinda like windows's hibernate!

You can do the same thing with Opera. :)

In fact, with Opera, you can even save your session. :)

@Dan Schulz - I see you like Opera and all, but why don't you consider other people like Firefox best.

I used Opera for a long time then I've switched to Firefox and I never felt the need to go back to Opera. Actually from all I've seen there are more Firefox users out there than Opera users.

What I'm saying is that Firefox is a pretty good software, don't ignore it just because you like Opera!

Okay, even based on your vitriolic screed I downloaded Opera and am playing with it. There are some nice things about it ( 50 MB vs 320 MB with the same tabs open, probably a lot of that owing to FireBug ) and some very irritating things about it ( bizarre hotkeys that mess the screen up, it doesn't follow standard behavior rules, like selecting text and typing over it ), but on balance it's not a bad browser. Right now I'd rank it somewhere between IE 7 and FF.

How do I make it spell check text fields, like FireFox does out of the box? It's great there's all this gee-whiz functionality, like a dozen calculators and 30 clocks and calendars ( all of which are built into the O/S ), but spell check instantly became "core functionality." I love that Opera uses less memory and is kinder to the old computer I'm using at the moment, but not at the price of less usefulness.

So I'm really hoping I missed something, that there's a widget, or something to that effect that puts spell check back into Opera.

Opera allows you to use the GNU Aspel library, which isn't included by default to cut down on the initial file size, among other things.

    http://www.opera.com/support/tutorials/opera/spellcheck

Mac users who are running Opera don't have to worry about this since the browser uses the operating system's spell checker instead. :)

As for the hotkeys, they can be a pain, but you have to remember that there is no standard for hotkeys, aside from a few "core" keys, like Ctrl+S and Ctrl+F (for example). You can learn more about Opera's keyboard shortcuts here: http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/keyboard

As for "standard behavior rules" what do you mean exactly?

And for the record, I do have Firefox on this computer; I just don't browse with it on a day to day basis.

About the spell check, thanks! I'm installing this right now.

The trouble I was having might be gmail and not Opera, since the browser doesn't have the same functionality in other sites with multi-line inputs. Although FF and IE don't do this in gmail, so I'm not sure. But when I select all the text ( quoted by default ) and then either hit delete or just start typing, it doesn't clear. I noticed clear all ( Ctrl-U, which unfortunately a lot of javascript based editors use for underline ) which solves the problem in either case, but it's a minor pain.

EDIT: I don't suppose there's a version that underlines misspellings, like FireFox and MS Office?

I have noticed that Gmail can be a royal PITA with Opera on my computer, and even with the spare computer I'm borrowing right now (mine died on me on my birthday of all days).

You know, even if it doesn't have the fancy style of spell check, it's a lot more accurate, and faster, than the one in FF. It doesn't work in gmail, but they have their own.

Anyway, thanks for recommending Opera; I'd heard it's "better" in the past, but I guess it's about time I started experimenting with it. There are some things in here I really like.
