Reasons to use alternative search engines?

Obviously it isn't general traffic. Are there particular types of traffic you can get from alternatives? Has anyone had success with an alternative search engine? Is there a reason to spend any time on them, or is it fire and forget at best?

    Google is the best !

I have observed that Yahoo and MSN search engines omit the links of their compatators. Not to a big extend, but they do.

I sympathize. Are there alternates that have been useful to you? What are some cool features of alternate search engines?

Banana Slug is a pretty cool one (probably not the sort of thing you're looking for, though!) :D

Google is by far the most on general people's mind....whenever any search need arise.

Other search engines mostly matter to people associated with web mastering....imo

Searchme.com combines a neat interface and decent results.

Use scroogle for google results without the ads and datamining.

The only reason to use another search engine is for more accurate results which in this case doesnt exist. If you are referring to optimising your site for other search engines I think its best just to focus on the big players because that is where you will get the quality traffic from.

I agree with rightman as well that when it comes to the average joe there are only 3 search engines in existence :).

Okay, there's a good point. Language specific search engines.

What about subcultures? Are there subculture specific search engines so that you begin with targeted traffic?

i would say forget about about google, they are always making so hard for us to master seo, they are really anti seo and there is too much compition. if you try to get google to recognise your links you will have spent too much time. im now just optimising for msn and yahoo as they will improve overtime and at least they pick up on my links :)
