How much does SEO work usually cost on average?

For example the link to my site is in my signature. If I wanted to get it ranked in 3 things:

    Mets Blog
    Mets Forum
    Mets Rumors

How much do you think the average person would charge?

NOrmally seo people would charge in keyword basis ie $50 or $60 per keyword.
if it is traffic based $200 to $300

They do not look like particularly competitive niches...

How many other websites compete for those keywords?

I would say that SEO price varies greatly based on a lot of factors. What do you define as reasonable? It does depend hugely on what the goals, expectations, and what needs to be done to fulfill those. Call me for a quote if you are considering hiring a SEO agency.

Your question, the way it was phrased, is akin to asking "How high is the sky?" I don't mean to sound flippant and I apologize if I came across that way, but there are many factors involved in SEO for a website. The first question any decent SEO person would need to know is, are you looking for on page or off page SEO? There's a big difference between both type and scope of work to be done for each of these.

On page SEO is pretty straight forward and can be done using mostly common sense and a few simple rules. To get consistent first page rankings however, you need off page SEO in conjunction. This includes many more tasks and is much more labor intensive, so it will cost more in both time and money. It includes things such as article writing and submission, forum submissions, social bookmarking, etc. These tasks can be outsourced, but outsourcing only works if you know what you're doing. I've seen people get in over their head more than a few times trying to outsource without a good plan of attack.

A good place to start checking out how much competition there is for you keywords is the Google Keyword Tool. It's free and easy to use. In checking it just now, I see that Mets Blog has an average of 22,000 searches with medium competition, yet the term metsblog has 49,500 monthly average and 60,500 last month, and LOWER competition than Mets Blog. Why not optimize for the higer traffic keywork with the lower competition?

I'll be happy to share some tips with you for free if you want to send me a message. If you need help with your SEO, I'm happy to do that too.
