Realistic expectations

I, like everyone else is trying to increase traffic to our website. I have a site that is a 5 months old (but changed domains so domain is basically 3 months old) and is getting about 30-40 unique visitors from search engines for total traffic of about 100-150 per day.

However, I'm always seeing everyone else getting hundreds if not thousands of visitors a day. Are the things I'm doing not good enough or is my domain just not old enough? I feel like I have pretty good content (I run a blog and I have quite a few commentators) but the traffic just isn't there.

Any help and advice would be helpful!

Work on getting more links to your site. Submit site to directories and any place you can get a free link to it.

I actually have quite a bit of backlinks (11000 in yahoo and 457 in google) but I'm just not seeing much results. I'm working hard on content (daily post at least) but haven't seen much results. Maybe I'm just being too impatient with all this but I was wondering if anyone can shed more light into the timing of how things progress for us newbies :)

Traffic from Search Engines (Google) depends on:

    - Your niche
    - Competition in your market
    - And the factors that govern SERPs

If you think you have nice big market then go ahead and keep on building backlinks, may be hire some SEO expert for onpage SEO and marketing ideas. The domain age is a factor in SERPs, but other factors dominate over this one. I had a blog that got 1000 uniques all from google after 10 days of registering domain.

Competition saturation plays a big role.

If you have a backlink of 11,000 while your competitors have an average 1,000,000 backlinks, then you are nowhere in the market.

Depends on what your site is about.
It could be that the topic of your site has a relatively small audience.

well your blog has pr0 so I'd say its not going to rank very well for "personal finance" which is an incredibly competitive thing to try and rank for. All I can say is good luck but it could be years before you rank well under personal finance, you are fighting against people who are willing to pay A LOT of money to be at the top...

good rankings in targeted keywords that has high search volume = high traffic
more quality backlinks = high quality traffic
    good content = high traffic

If you can have them you would definitely have high traffic.

PR0 doesn't mean that your site would not get better ranking from search engine. If keywords is very competitive you need to do more to improved your rankings. It depends on how you optimized your site.

well pr0 is never going to beat a site with pr5 simply because it will have backlinks from decent relevant sites, im not saying pr is everything, but it does show how well linked your site is..

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm waiting for the next update to see if I get a bump in PR. The domain is relatively new so I'm hoping that the PR update is not done yet since I was N/A about 3 weeks ago.

It seems like most people talk about content and back links so I will just continue to write good content which will attract more back links. It just sounds like it will be a long journey to more traffic since I'm hovering around 100-150 uniques a day on avg :)

Your site is only 5/3 months old, so you is probably still in the sandbox. So after couple of months or until a full year has pass (starting from when google first found your site) then you will notice a significant increase of visitors to your site from google.

So while you is waiting to get out of the sandbox, continue to create content, gain links, and search for other methods of getting traffic.

in my opinion, you must focus on backlinks building (especially link from social bookmark sites)

I have a stumbleupon profile and sometimes submit my articles to digg and reddit, but no major traffic from them.

I know many of my articles are interesting because I get back links from many of the articles I write but like i said before I might just need some time for the domain to gain "age"
