I have seen a lot of real estate directories in the last few weeks, ranging from global to region.

If lucky there was one or two that stood out, the rest were crapola, try and scam as much ad revenue as i could.

it is a crowded full of crap market, good luck with your endevours, quality will be the key to your success

No matter you make it general or niche, to make money you shall have higher pr. If you have higher pr, it doesn't matter you make it niche or general.

Real Estate and Business are both saturated so you will need to come up with something pretty special to stand out from the crowd.

If I were you and given the fact that you haven`t started yet, I would find a better less competitive niche there are still thousands to choose from.

Thats good advice, also the thing to consider is it can be suprisingly easy to rank for some niches, like shockingly easy sometimes.

Also something else to think about is the type of niche and if those people would actually submit to a directory.

Theres some fantastic niches out there, but the sites would never find you as a directory.

Standing out of the crowd is best one. Any type of directory should have traffic first, then it is possible to success.

I think I would opt for real estate. I've seen so many business directories that are that in name only. They start allowing basically any site and migrate to being a general directory. You would also have to continually decide what the correct definition of a business is as it applies to your site.

With a real estate directory I would add a number of extra fields like, residential, commercial, and perhaps even licenses or other credentials. Offer more than a simple description and link and you will be a much more desirable place to advertise. If you want to have a membership-driven site, perhaps even add a listing of the week feature where the Realtors could list one of their offered properties - perhaps even charge an extra fee for that.

About two years ago I took a Web Marketing class - a disappointment and thankfully only a small investment of money and time. One thing that confounded the 'expert' teacher was the real estate broker who, based on her rankings, knew more than the instructor about SEO. It was actually quite funny to watch. I would have loved if she had been the teacher instead of a fellow student. So, to assume that Realtors don't know about directories and backlinks is a mistake. That Realtor had a number of directory and other advertisement-related backlinks and ranked #1 or #2 for many very competitive terms in a very competitive market.

Whatever niche you decide to go with, be vicious about maintaining your topic and you will quickly be able to take on that list of 250 CanadianEh posted as many niche directories fail to maintain their topics. Add extra content, it doesn't have to be long-winded articles and RSS feeds ;) and you might even start outranking the Realtor's sites.

Good luck. And if you are not familiar with real estate marketing, you might want to call your local Board of Realtors (or whatever your country might call their local business association) and ask them what their agents look for with advertising and their websites. You might be surprised by the answers and find something truly unique and highly-desired that the other real estate directories have over-looked.
