Is the "read more" <!--more Show me the rest, please--> Code (markup): in wordpress necesary to avoid duplicate content? thanks
i think it's useful for search engines and your users. it will be difficult to read your blog if they are long
It's not necessary but Id go one step further using the All-in-One SEO plug-in to only allow the full article pages to be indexed. That way your homepage doesnt have a bunch of different content and the focus is on the article pages. That's where you want the traffic heading anyway.
The application of that does not hurt. The point is that many themes have similar page structures for your posts as well as your home page, which could lead them to suffer from the duplicate content penalty.
What I mean is ...is the application of "read more" helps in avoiding duplicate content? My homepage has higher authority than individual pages so long tail searches must lead to the homepage if I stopped using "read more"??? thanks again
In short, yes, this is one way to avoid dup content. I like to use a different tactic that just displays the "excerpt" on the homepage. I write a little summary and then have a link to the post. Also, I have it so the summary is automatically the meta-description on the post's page. If you want to see an example of the excerpt on the homepage, you can check out my homepage at http://www.bradleyspencer.com/ This tactic has REALLY helped in getting many more pages indexed (a good index of your duplicate content problems) And, not to pump up my own ebook here, but this is covered with a whole bunch of other stuff in Wordpress SEO Blueprint. Check it out!
