Re-purposed website for high Google PR?

I've come across a number of website in my niche lately that have a big PR number like 6. They all look like they have been re-purposed for this niche. One looks like it was for some it was for some city council but now it's just selling affiliate products.

Won't Google catch on to this?

How do these people get these PR6 websites? Wouldn't someone care?

Has anyone else seen this in their niche?

Yes I have... I have in seen on my E-Cigarette niche, a website that is high ranking and iit is amazing the links they get! They keep the initials of the website name (probably a government service) they bought and make a affiliate webpage and keep the old backlinks from the former website. I care because this guy is whipping me in the rankings.

I'm pretty sure I know who you're talking about, whom is also probably one of the planet's best affiliate SEOs, period. He does this technique because it works and he's a huge tester.

The trick with doing this is to make sure the domain you re-purpose has a huge set of branded and URL anchors. So when you take it over, you can start hitting it with high powered links that are keyword and synonym related. The results with this technique are super fast and powerful.

Won't Google catch on to this?

Doubtful. It's been used for years and years. Domains transfer owners and change content all the time. They shouldn't issue a penalty for changing topic of a site, nor for changing ownership.

How do these people get these PR6 websites? Wouldn't someone care?

Auction. Expiring domains are picked up a auctions by various domain providers. Tools like Register Compass and PR Powershot can be used to analyze in masse. There's also domain brokers that act as a middle man.

Has anyone else seen this in their niche?

    Me. :)

I was actually talking about the e-cigarette niche.

Does the domain start with SBI? that's not the only one I've seen, another had to do with poetry. How much would a PR6 domain cost, any ideas?
