Hello, I just had a few questions about rating threads. 1: Can you view who has rated a thread? 2: Is there a min. level that a member can rate a thread? Such as only members with 10 or more posts can rate threads. 3: Why do you think people don't rate threads more often? Whether good or bad, let the forum know what you think, right? Most people, I imagine, don't realize it is an option. 4: Can DP make the change so that you are not allowed to rate your own thread? I've noticed that on some other forums you cannot rate your own thread, this might be something to apply here at DP. Thanks for your help and time Rich
1. No 2. No 3. People would surely rate this thread.. Actually most don't care about rating. Your competitor would rate your thread 1 star always! 4. Would be a nice idea, so that thread starters don't make their threads 5 star!
3 it can and is abused, thats why most regs never rate anything unless it is worth rating. 4 some newbies rate their own threads 5 just to get attention. sadly it dont work. i rate a thread by the number and speed of the posts it gets. not by a star count. i always rate #1 if i see a new thread with 5 stars, as thats the OP rating himself.
I totally understand your point. And I think that is why the feature to rate your own thread should be shut off as it is in other Vbulletin forums. Then you wouldn't have to go around rating thread a 1 just because it is a 5. I have been given a 5 star rating by someone before, w/o me ever voting. On my available, unregistered DN list thread. Also on a vote thread I started. I hope someone woudlnt give that a 1 just because of the 5 star rating that another member gave.. You know what I'm saying. Ahh.. to be honest, like you said, most people determine a threads worth based on posts, post speed and quality
all 3 of shazz' new threads stood out like a sore thumb with his name and all 5 stars, well they all got a 1 from me. and i left him a message in one just so he knew i knew.
Yup I did, first time rating any thread here on DP. I didn't think I caused any damage. DP could add who rated the thread and can't rate your own thread very easy if they wanted to or cared about it.
I almost never rate threads, just becuase I never look at a threads rating. My attention is caught by the title or the OP or if I see one of the posts in the search results. I never sort by thread rating, and I don't ever look at the rating for a thread... It just doesn't seem meaningful to me.
It's hilarious when you see brand new, single post threads with 5 stars - you just know that the OP has rated their own. You also know how sad they must be to do that!
LOL I'll admit that I am guilty of doing this once or twice in the past.. And I promise I'll never do it again.. At the time I just wanted to see if my thread would gain more exposure. The whole rating system really would be useful if people were not allowed to rate there own threads. Even though it doesn't matter that much, DP might as well take full advantage of a currently installed feature rather let it be manipulated by members. From what I here it is a very simple thing to make it so users can't rate their own threads so why not make the change.. OK, I think I've voiced my opinion Thanks for all the feedback and answers to my questions guys, much appreciated!
most of us are webmasters. we might have the gimmicks on our own sites for members, you know the teens that like that stuff. but i think as webmasters, we know whats of value and whats not. and someone has just gone and rated every thread in GC
