Does anybody have any code, Javascript or other, for a simple rating system that a user comes, hovers over 1-5 stars, and clicks and it makes the selection without refreshing and doesnt let the same IP vote for that particular item again? How would I create a cookie for tracking what IPs have voted, or something of that nature? Thanks!!!
Plz let us know about your skill level in AJAX(client side) and PHP-MySQL(or other server side) technologies. You could also use one of the many free ones available. Plz google it.
thats the thing... i dont have any skill in these. can you tell me the best one to learn for writing cookies on the users browser and storing their IP info so they cannot vote again, and also the easiet language to learn for a simple database of the votes.
If you don't have skills in any of those, for timebeing, consider buying one. I am sure it won't cost much.
If you are using WordPress or other platform, there are many available. I use Lester Chan's WP-PostRating plugin @ http://lesterchan.net/wordpress/readme/wp-postratings.html. If you need additional help, just post a reply.
You need to write the data in a cookie, but also write it in a database server side, using ajax. When the visitor enter your site, you check if it has a cookie,if yes, it double check server side if the info is valid. If it doesnt have any cookie, it verifies with its ip address to see if any votes have been counted for him server side. Otherwise, it lets the visitor votes in your system. You need to do that that way, because some people may delete their cookies themselves. Steve
This is an easy star rating system in PHP, www.hscripts.com/scripts/php/starrating.php You will not find such a thing in Javascript.
