I was thinking about making a site that has mixtapes you can download.

    Kind of like datpiff.com

But since the mixtapes are free from the artists, do you think they will mind if i have a download for these free mixtapes

Example: Chamillionaire.com has 2 mixtapes that he is giving away, could i have these on my site to download for free"?

Oh, and im not making any money from this.

Please let me know what i should do.

    Thanks:D

    How about asking the source?

He means that maybe you should ask the artist (or more likely their label) if you can distribute their mixtapes for free on your website. I'd let them know that there would be no profit in it for you.

I have a bit of experience in the recording industry and I would guess that unless you are able to contact an artist directly, you might have some issues. After DJ Drama got busted earlier this year, labels have been far more strict about what their artists release and who is releasing it. Its often an issue of metrics as well as damage control if they get caught with unlicensed samples or beats.

Also, if you are considering a career in the music industry, you really ought to read a series of books called This Business of Music. The original is like 600 pages. You can find older editions at a lot of libraries, and can probably get a new copy for $30-40.

    Best of luck.
