RANT : Thinking about dropping adsense

So I've put hundreds of hours into my sites, getting back links and that other stuff. As a result I have two PR4 sites and several lower PR sites.

I've been running adsense for something like a little less than a year, the sites in question have generated a mere 20,000 hits.

I've played with multiple adsense layouts and followed a lot of the good tips I've found here at DP.

How much money have I made ?

Something like $37 dollars. Which means I actually haven't gotten ANY money yet. So while google is getting money from my site - I'm basically displaying their ads for free while I sit here and make nothing.

But in the mean time google forbids me from using their competitors, from having certain content on my site, from linking to certain types of content and whole lot of other bullcrap.

So I'm starting to ask myself - why am I bending over backwards for google when google isn't doing shit for me ?

I've had to resort to selling links on these sites so I have little doubt that before I ever hit the $100 mark google will "find" something wrong with my site(s) and pull my adsense account, meaning all of this would have been for nothing.

In reality I've made over 10x from JUST selling links than from adsense. And thats money I get to SEE unlike my magical "$37" dollars I've "earned" on adsense.

I know a lot of you are going to just tell me to shut up, or work harder or something like that. But if this much hard work and time can't generate more than $37 dollars I'm not interested.

I can't even tell you how many of those magical 1cent clicks I've gotten on adsense.

Oh and in case you were wondering - the adsense site is crashed to hell right now.

20k hits over the course of a year doesn't seem like much. Never use the term hits. What is it supposed to mean?? Uniques, impressions? Whether it's uniques or impressions it doesn't seem like much really. Works out to what like 50 HITS a day?? Work on getting traffic instead. The earnings work out to about 10 cents a day, looks OK to me.

I hear you mate, it is damn hard to keep going but it does get better. Stick to it, and in the meantime, go to text-link-ads.com with those PR sites and make some money. Text links have tripled my (pathetic) adsense earnings, and motivated me to focus on the sites.
    Good luck

20k users on one year, is NOTHING. Seriously, that's 50 users a day or something like that! You can't except make any serious money from that, and neither can you try mixing with adsense layout when you have such low traffic stats.

    - Focus on making better content, since good content will keep the users coming back and give you free backlinks.
    - Maybe it's an good idea to drop some of the sites, if they won't make you any good money and they only take up your time?
    - Drive traffic to your site. There is a billion guides on how to do that on DP.
    - Who said you can't advertise for other affiliates with Adsense? Fuck that! Find some affiliate that works in your niche, and get to working.
    - Be creative.

If you have several sites that only total 50 hits/day your problem isn't Adsense but is getting more traffic. It doesn't matter what ad program you use you won't make much at 50 hits/day. If you get 2-4% CTR thats only 1-2 clicks per day.

Focus on building traffic and the money should follow.

    Hi,

What sort of themes are your sites covering?

I'd say dont give up hope, I have a bunch of sites and one of them sat and earned about a dollar in nine months then all of a sudden $2 a day, doesn't sound much, but it adds up..

It's really weird, this site that earns $2 a day has pr0 whereas I have a pr4 site that earns nothing from adsense..

It's not a secret that the kind of site you build effects the visitors willingness to click ads. While Myspace may have a zillion visits a day and be profitable because of the huge volume the clickthroughs are very very low. This is due to the fact that people are not searching for anything specific so the ads mean nothing to them.

Directories are typically low click through targets, as they are looking for something specific and don't want to be sidetracked by ads.

Placement, size, color, blah blah are in fact important but so are the niches you work. You have to be in markets where advertisers are spending dollars. There is a reason that Insurance pays more than Celebrities. People don't go online to just browse insurance, they have a purpose in mind. So if you do it right those links are more likely to be clicked, plus they will pay a whole lot more because the benefits to acquiring even one new customer could be worth the $5 click to get them. But conversely the guy selling posters might be able to spend a few pennies to attract a sale.

This is not meant to be condescending, but rather to get you to evaluate what you are doing with your sites.

Adsense is not a good solution for every type of site. There are many other ways to monetize your site. Find programs that meet your visitors expectations, then presell and lead them to the links you want them to use. You can't make them buy but you sure can send them off in the right direction.
