the purpose of SEO is to both build up SE ranking as well as drive more traffic. However, a high ranking doesnt guarantee lots of traffic. Any thoughts on this?
Hi there, In my experience, generally if you have a high ranking, you will get a significant amount of traffic, but only if the keyword phrase(s) you are ranking well for are actually searched often by people. If only a small number of people are searching on those phrases you're not going to get much traffic unfortunately. Have you used a tool like worktracker.com or the free inventory.overture.com to get a rough idea on numbers of people who are using those keywords? Another way to tell would be to check out the number of PPC advertisers in that niche, only have a few (or none) would tell you that a) it's a potential goldmine, or b) Confirm that there is no substantial traffic (no one else is bothering with it). Another possibility is that the description you are using is just not enticing enough for people to want to click. Give people a compelling reason to click. Did you put a description in yourself on the page using something like:- <meta name="description" content="My compelling must click text here"/> If you didn't use the above tag, chances are that the search engine just grabbed a random part of your page for the description. Keyword rankings will definitely will give your site a huge traffic but it depends on searches per month of the keywords and the ranks of the keywords at major search engine.

High ranking for a low traffic keywords won't bring you much traffic. That's pretty obvious and that's why webmasters try to rank high for a very popular, high traffic keywords.

Don't forget to add a killer description (in the meta tags). If the description isn't good, I generally don't click on the site when I search on Google or other SE's. No time to waste.
You mean titles? Because google does not consider metas nor shows that in results. Nonethless, writing good short titles is so important to grab people's attention.
When you got the first ranking in your targeted keywords, your traffic will grow unless your targeted keywords has no searchers at all. When you only ranked in the top 10, maybe you will get nothing but if you are in the top 3, you could see the big differences in traffic.
