It's a question of time and money. You certainly won't get to top positions in a short time whatever you do because Google won't let you. Anyway you can buy an old website and promote it. Then you'll speed up the process.

If you rank top 10 for "ringtones" you will end up ranking top 10 for thousands of related ltkw's.

Are you trying to say it could be done in 3 months? How? How much?

Ok. So you say 8-10 years and $200k.

I must assume that you are just throwing wild numbers in the air and not basing it on anything. Why would you think it would take that long and cost that much? What in the world would you spend $200k on (as far as serps are concerned), and why would it take a decade?????

It'd take more than just cash. Here's an idea though. Right now most affiliate networks are requiring people to have the terms&conditions on the landing page for all ringtones sites. That includes carrier select pages, AND whitelabels AND the end landing page. If someone worked out a deal with some of the major providers and frontends(ringtones.net, glamtones, playphone, etc) to put their link INTO the terms and conditions?
If you could dodge the sandbox, that'd be a damn good start. Oh yeah, and it's not really very sustainable. But that whole niche has dirty links, so maybe it wouldnt stick out.

Targetting the top 10 is reasonable, but I think top 5 is a closed market on ringtones. Top 5 consists of sites that passed Wikipedia and MTV.com in the serps, go figure ^^

I agree with seoperson, instead of wasting a lot of time and money on ranking for ringtone(s) I'd rather try ranking for a list of long tails and secondary keywords that could bring in close to the same amount of traffic.

How much in a day do you think one will make ranking in the top 10 for ringtones?

    Assuming no longtails?
WordZe puts it at 86552 searches per month for "ringtones" w/ no extra words.
So thats 2885 per day clicks.
Eliminate 10% for non US/High payout countries. That leaves2596.56 valid clicks/day.
Assuming a 1:18 converts into a sale. 144.25 leads per day.
You'd probably have a good payout on it, so if it was $18, it'd come out to be $2596.56 per day, or $77896.80 per month.

Doesn't sound THAT impressive, but combine with the clicks from your links that are spread around and longtails? Not bad.
And it'd probably convert at better than 1:18 if you fine tuned it sufficiently. May even get down to 1:10(so double the figures more or less).

It's hard to truly gauge, since I'm not sure how well ringtones convert via organic traffic.

If you look at the top ten you have: lowest pr4, newest 2005. So I would say 2-3 years maybe a bit faster but not much, if you want to do it the "legal" way.

If you are you trying to say that I'am ranking for keywords like "mobile ringtones", "nokia ringtones", "download ringtones" in top 10, and if I get a good top 10 placement for the single keyword "ringtones", then I will loose the rankings for the 3 keywords mentioned above.

It's not possible and if you think like this way, you are mistaken.

For 3 months, I was just quoting other honourable members of the thread.

ring tones is a tough one, i think that unless you have some money to throw at it it will be very problematic right now there are 147,000,000 results in Google for search tones, which is exceptionally tough comeptition. My advice would be to try to find long tail keywords that are similar but with less comeptition. Use wordtracker to find these.

I think that's a great idea. Perhaps tough to land the sale for it though as those guys are going to ask a lot.

I'm assuming the site you are wanting to rank is a source for the ringtones (think flycell, glamtones, etc here) and not just an affiliate. If that's the case, I'd also throw some innovative ideas at your own affiliate program that doesn't have javascript ads to get some people pushing your offer.

If you've got enough funds to last 3 months, and users stay subscribed, it seems like your costs come close to breaking even. At this point you've got a few thousand links from different IPs/sites and a whole shitton of residual payments coming monthly from subscribers.

That might help get you on your way to ranking but I wouldn't hold my breath. This would be a tough niche to crack.
