Hopefully this is a quick and straight-forward question.

What is the approximate max number of search results (upper limit/ceiling) I should look for when wanting to rank for a long-tail keyword?

    Asked in a different way:

Is there a point when ranking becomes unreasonable do to so many search results? What is that point? Of course, the lower the search results the better.

    Hey fellow Minnesotan,

That's not a clear cut answer. It all depends on the conversion rates and amount of money you are making per transaction, advertising $$, or however else you are monitizing the traffic. Low amounts of searches is not bad if the product you are selling, promoting, etc. brings in big $$.

What I have found to do is to start with a few terms and break it down from testing. Target some easy to get top terms, and determine from that. I have found adwords keywrod tool and other such tools do drastically have higher numbers reported than I see for having top terms and traffic.

    Just my 2 cents

There is no right answer, if you can get an exact domain, you have hit gold anyway. Otherwise you should not only look at number of results but also look at home many of these results have done good on page and off page SEO.
