Has anyone seen published statistics from a traffic study based on google rank position? I looking for something that showed something like organic traffic increased an average of 20% with a #1 keyword ranking vs. a #5 or #7 ranking of the same keyword, etc.?

I agree, it would make a good tool, but would be very difficult. People searching for "nike shoes" are novice searchers, where people searching for "seo marketing" are not novice searchers.

The novices are much more likely to click an ad from my experience.

Take a look at this report, maybe not eaxctly what you're looking for, but it gives a pretty good idea.

    Google's golden triangle.

New EyeTracking Study verifies the importance of page position and rank in both Organic and PPC search results for visibility and click through.

A joint eye tracking study conducted by search marketing firms Enquiro and Did-it and eye tracking firm Eyetools has shown that the vast majority of eye tracking activity during a search happens in a triangle at the top of the search results page indicating that the areas of maximum interest create a "golden triangle."

The first phase of the study was conducted with 50 people in Eyetools' eye tracking lab in San Francisco, California and presented panel participants with 5 distinct scenarios that would require the use of a search engine. Google was used as the search engine in all of the instances.

Well I definitely saw an increase of about 10% when my one site jumped from a #3 to a number #1 ranking in Google for a specific keyword. Definitely worth the effort in trying to get that top position.
