I have one of my sites ranking No10 on Google.com now but the problem is that it changes every 2-3 hours and drops to 30-40th rank and then comes back to 10 after a few hours. Is this how its supposed to be? Or does google update rankings for highly competetive words more often then low competetion ones? I am talking about a word which shows has 1,080,000,000 results on google. When the rank comes back to no10 my server dies could this be the reason? I am in process of getting a quad xeon as thats what it would take to handle the traffic Any suggestions from the experts would be most appreciated to stablise the rankings.
Your server dies because of the traffic? If so, that's great news (big picture). The shifting in position could have to do with not having all google datacenters in sync. You can check where you stand in the different datacenters with this tool: http://oy-oy.eu/google/trydc/dc.aspx . I am sure there are others that do the same thing, that's just the one I use. Normally place rankings don't fluctuate that much that fast.
Different data centers show different rankings. You should use the DP keyword suggestion tool to see how many people are actually searching for the keyword. High Google search results doesn't mean it is a keyword people actually search for.
Yeh dies due to high traffic and my host has pulled the cable waiting for layeredtech to set a new server and they are going to take another 12 hours before I can get the box The home page is actually indexed with the f***ing error message on it Never came across this kind of shit before. How long before this error message indexing fades away ? Do you think m gonna loose this no10 fluctuation ranking due to site being off line more then 7-8 hours now and will be offline another 12 hours and thats if all goes well.
Yeh it gives like 1200-1300 unique visitors an hour at no10 rank so dont think I need any more assurance all I am worried about is that I dont wanna loose this ranking due to downtime anything I can do to prevent G from thinking my website has vanished?
If your site is ranked high and gets lots of traffic, most likely G bot also visits often. I hope it won't visit when the server is down. I think you should take care of the situation asap.
What kind of keywords is that which can overwhelm your server with traffic when ranking 10th, In my 5 years history online I saw 42 000 visits coming from the same keyword in one month which means around 1350 visitors/day, $5/month shared hosting can handle this traffic.
Yes, I agree with Janna. You can use the http://www.mcdar.net/dance/index.php to check what is really your rank results. it will check for various datacenters... okay. Put your keywords on the search bar.
Google update rankings for highly competitive keywords. We used google dance of mcdar in checking keywords, as you see google have a data center, for each data center, there have a different result or sometimes the same. Your server could not be the problem for your ranking and what is quad xeon? It could help traffic for your site. To stabilise ranking is to promote your site and to do link building for your site.
