Hello I am the new guy out here even if i have been reading about SEO for a while. Can somebody extimate how much time do i need to be on top 10 for keyword "free" (without quotes). Also , what kind of web hosting do i need to buy , so it will resist to such a traffic assault?! With an 3% click rate from Adsense and an average of 20-30 cents/click i think i will be able to pay a few cloud servers, no? I was thinking even to put an parked page from time to time, to have an CTR for adsense up to 100% (or some javascripts spoofing)
Oh gosh, you are targeting a pretty competitive keyword. Lets say you need a reputable domain with and age 12 years or more with more backlinks than adobe.com from very reputable sources. So lets say you need a miracle to reach that spot for the keyword "free". Or you can buy some ads on adwords and you will reach top in no time.

Why would you want to rank for "free"? What's your objective? How do you plan on monetizing traffic? To be honest, this is a very generic term and any traffic it generates would be highly un-targeted. If you're trying to give away something for "free" or have a free product offering, this traffic would almost certainly produce bad results. You'd need to target something more specific like "free widgets" for the traffic to be effective and generate conversions. Not sure why you'd want to target this. And like other posters have mentioned, it would be very difficult to get high rankings...
I agree with the comment above, How would ranking for "free" gain you money? what is the person looking for when they put that keyword in? it is way to generic. It would be very hard to get to number one for this, and as in previous replies you would need a very strong domain to start with.
