Ranking in other languages

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right category.

If I obtain a top ranking on a keyword in Google.com, will that site and ranking show up on Google.jp.

I wanted to know because I'm working on a site for a customer who wants the site I'm designer to show up under the same keywords in Japan.

Or does the site needs to be done in Japanese and submitted to google.jp.

    Thanks in advance

If the user in that country searches in the language you are in, you might rank just like if you searched foreign words in google.com

    Cheers

I would be very surprised if you had the same rankings in Japan as in the US. Geotargeting factors would come into play. Any .co.jp websites targeting the same keywords would outrank you quite easily. Google would also look at factors such as link from Japan based websites and other things associating your website with Japan.

I agree with vansterdam, you won't have the same ranking in Google.jp as in .com. But that does not mean you need to create pages in Japanese now. Google will analyze the content and will now which countries the website is targeting. It may even fare better in Japan.

The most important thing is BACKLINK. You must build link network from sites well positioned in Japan. There is something like geo-related-PR, strength of site in specific region. Domain name is important, but not the most important, geolocalization of webserver, too.
I have two sites in two languages. One is very popular in Poland, top positions on many keywords, but totally invisible in US. Second site is going to be good positioned in US, but is very hard to find it in Poland, even using English language.

Are you using Wordpress? WP has a global translator plugin that translates your indexes to all supported languages.
