Hi, With everyone trying to do SEO to have there site found in google (mainly) have you ever wondered how a site can rank high for a keyword that you have never done any SEO for? example: my site is targeted for about 5 different keywords and ranks just about no where in google but high on the rest. I found today I rank top out of 5 million results for "green caves" (or seconds depending on DC) With no backlinks with the anchor text "green caves" and only having pages in my site with this anchor text it makes you wonder why you rank so high. I'm wondering if it has more to do with the number of actual searches done on a word rather than the number of results which will determian how hard it is to rank for a specific word. I'm thinking this because of my example, although you have over 5 million results overtune is only showing "68 green grotto cave" as the highest? Can someone back this up or is this just a odd case? JP
Results can be an indication of how hard it will be to rank for a keyword, but for keywords that have no overture, I doubt there are any sites targeting that keyword - and thus, makes it very easy to rank for.
Take a wild, off the wall, keyword. One that few to no one will search for. Put it on your meta tags, and maybe mentioned in your content once or twice. Poof! In very little time, in msn for sure, then google and yahoo, your site will be number one for that term! Of course, as stated, with few to no searches, it will do you like zip.
It is very easy to get high ranking for less competitive words. The simple answer is less "competition". I fully agree with iowadawg on this.
So the best way to get top rankings on google would be to... Check overture for your keyword. Pick the lowest search combo and do a bit of SEO on those keywords Work your way up the list to the 5 star keyword you want to rank for. Doing this would in theory get you top of your area for just about all everything.
There are only 14 pages that have "green caves" in their title. If you were optimising a page, the first thing you would do is put your targetted keyphrase in the title so this gives an indication of the competition you have.
