Ranking for "example" better than example(without quotes)

    Hello,
I am just wondering why i would rank better for "example" than example(same word but without quotes); If i have example as my anchor text on relevant websites with good PR.

I rank lower without quotes, there is a website above me. However with quotes i rank higher, and the site which ranked higher than me without quotes is not even on the page.

Any ideas to why and how i can improve my ranking for the word without quotes?

Your question is confusing. Can you explain in a better way?

    1. Because nobody writes "example" on webpages. So the amount of webpages with that as the term is much lower than webpages with example. Therefore you can rank well but at the same time there is # 2 below.

    2. Nobody types in "example" as a search query, as such it is not a competitive term waste of time to SEO for and undoubtedly will not drive traffic. (With the exception of SEOs who happen to check)

    3. With quotes such as "music rocks" also indicates the two words used together on any webpage.

you can see this with any keyword phrase, by entering the term in to Google with and without quotes.

    :)

but if i search for the word with or without quotes the number of results are the same, just in a different order.

    For example:

If i type in music website i rank 3rd. But if i type in "music website" (with quotes) i rank 2nd. The rival site which ranked above me without quotes does not rank on the first page with the quotes. Now, i have links on other websites (relevant, with PR) with the anchor text as music website (obviously no quotes).

So, why do i rank higher with quotes than without and why does the other site rank well without quotes and is nowhere with quotes?

It depends on whether or not you are searching for one word or more than one word.

If you are searching for more than one word, then the answer is obvious.

If you are searching for only one word, then the answer is "only Google knows".

You rank high in this command search "keywords" because your site page has exact text keywords.

While in keywords without quote you rank lower because your site is not optimized well.

Get more quality links by using your targeted keywords as anchor text and optimized also the content for your targeted keywords.

Yes that is true! When you search "example" then it gives you direct traffic for those sites which have exact example word in their title, Description. While for example it shows you all sites which have enough relation with this word & has enough traffic to come out on first page.

I hope that it wud clear your Question :)

It still doesnt make much sense to me! :)

So by reading some of the posts, it may be an on page thing rather than off page? I know that the site which is above me has small text at the top stuffed with keywords, maybe that is why, not that i want to do that :)
