Hi, I have a new-ish site that I managed to get in the top 10 out of 6 M in under month. Only in the past week has it been in the top 10. But today its ranking dropped from the first page to the second, for one term, and from the second page to tenth for a very competitive word with 45 M results. This site was producing some very healthy traffic for me, but now I fear it's gone. I'm gaining new one way links all the time, and before today its ranking had improved steadily -- is it likely my ranking will return? Cheers!
Hang in there. Things will settle down hopefully by end of the day. It has been discussed a bit here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=6408
It is very common to "pop up" in the rankings on Google for a very new site. In nearly all cases (for competetive words) you will start dropping soon after. You will then face a lot of work and a bit of patience to get back to that first page. This is due to a combination of filters that many refer to as the "Sandbox". Its hard to tell if thats the case without seeing the site but regardless of this, keep getting links and honing your on page. You will see it slowly creep back up. I'm fully aware of the sandbox effect. However another site I worked on never popped up in the top ten out of 6 M results, instead it was kept back, and has only just started creeping up.
Make some minor changes to the pages by adding a sentence of added material or such. Keep the pages fresh. It will help. We have had some big jumps yesterday that sent some results back a few pages, but most come back or increased today.
