it is normal specially if your competition gets really hard and if your domain is less than a year of age

seems a little vague for a website designer? Probalby building of backlinks too fast or links from bad neighborhoods can cause you to get into the sandbox!

Matt Cutts has been trying to get people to give up sites with paid links... Maybe this is a result of that...

Depends...how new is the site? Most sites will rank, then drop in rank, then come back up in rank...known as the "Google Dance" and is VERY normal. If it's an older site, then this may not be the case and it could be because your competition is working harder than you. You'll be hard-pressed to 'build links too fast'...you have to go beyond warp speed to do this in my experience (and we've gone HARD in link building) and in the experience of other webmaster and SEO experts that I know. Def should stay away from 'bad neighborhoods' though.

It's depend on competition also. You will have to do each and everything to get fist position. Simply you will have to do better than your competitor. Now your competitor is doing better than you because of it you site ranking is going down.
