Ranked in google without backlinks

Hi, i am doing some promotion for a site. They are a big company and the agency i work for is doing their marketing. I have been entrusted with the SEO for them. My question is:

This site has ZERO backlinks, they have NEVER optimized for any keyword, there is NO keyword meta tag and unless i search for the site itself, it NEVER shows up for any of the keywords on Google or Yahoo. YET they have a page rank of 4. How is that possible? These people have NEVER done any SEO. They have a 15 page site and there are no backlinks for any of the pages.

    This has me perplexed.

INCENTIVE: 2 FREE diggs and 1 free stumble for anyone who can answer this. I will do this for anyone who answers, as long as the answer is sensible. :)

it's very possible that the website you are talking about it's being redirected 301 from another domain that had pagerank4 or more :)

the site is www.dermacare.com. They are a client of the ad agency i work at.

I checked for back links on Google and www.iwebtool.com/backlink_checker. they have 225 backlinks on Yahoo.

I don't know if the old version was owned by anyone else or not. They signed on as our client last week. So we don't know much. All i know is that their site ranks very badly on search engines and yet they have a PR4. Was just curious as to how that could happen.

Also, please put the site you want Dugg or stumbled here. A deal is a deal. :)

there are more factors than just backlinks. age of domain, perceived authority by google, content, amount of pages and more

Well I am new to SEO but learning very quickly. Got 3 sites to the first page of Google in one month against some very competitive keywords. So not too bad. I just come here to learn for the experts. :)

well i dont need any diggs, however think abt this, website having PR4 with 15 pages there, moreover its something 9 years old.. Still they need SEO. If they are concern about earning.. let me knw.. i help them for free.

This is something by doing nonthing they are on PR4.. if they start putting an extra page each and every day... by the year end they should be able to get good PR.. and once your PR is 5or 6 i hope most of the people can earn good bucks..

Google does tend to rank a new site high in the positions.

For get about PR. Get their site fixed and their rankings up.

It actually has more backlinks than that when your logged in. Yahoo site explorer doesn't show all the backlinks any longer unless your loggin in.

Good advice Cormac and that is the plan. I want them to place higher in search engines for relevant keywords so that they get more hits. I was just curious about their PR since i didn't find much optimization.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I have to say, DP is one of the best learning forums i have ever experienced.

For the redirects, you should look in the .htaccess file, but i doubt it if you find it,if this site is redirected from another domain, you need to check the .htaccess file for that domain.

Also,if the domain you are talking about is old,it can simply rank on some keywords without many links ( age matters alot for Google ).Also,if it's a new site,it ranks anyway for the first 1-2 weeks,it's part of Google's algorithm .After this period, the site will visit the lovely Google sandbox for a little while so the SEO and link building comes very handy after that.Note that being in sandbox, the site will be very sensitive regarding Google so don't take a huge amount of links ;)

    hope that helps u

I have some sites that are about 2 years old but untouched. They were just sitting there and aging. They got a PR2 and PR3 from nothing. The only people visiting were whois. domain info. Now Im starting to build more links for it.
