Ranked highly for competitive KWs for about 2 hours yesterday

For about two hours yesterday, a site I work on started receiving traffic for a few very competitive head terms, and was ranked in the top 4 on Google serps. Then suddenly I stopped getting that traffic and rankings slipped to their old place several pages into the serps.

No other traffic or kws were affected - except for this new traffic, everything else looks normal on my stats.

I have not done any SEO for those terms - the last time any SEO was actively done was more than a year ago. The only change on the site is I recently started adding new content (*not* related to the competitive KWs), and I did a few things to increase load time.

So what do you think - does this mean anything? Did Google favor my site for a few hours but then decide it's not right for these KWs?

    thanks for your ideas :)

Thanks for your reply! Is there anything I can do to help the Google dance finish with me in the top of rankings? :)
Or did Google decide my site is not good to dance with :(

probably google is doing random updates to confuse everyone. it probably doesn't mean anything. but you should try adding more content to your site. try adding content that is related to your keywords and adding some content that is not directly related to your keywords.

Often serps will fluctuate-are the pages you saw ranking well new or did you view them previously when logged in to Google which displays a distorted view?

At the very least, it shows that any changes you're making are forcing Google to reassess your website rankings- which is only a good thing. Keep adding quality content and sourcing backlinks and you will continue to see improvements.

Agreed. Often when you see a page rank well-(all be it for a short time) it bodes well for the future IF you get some decent links.

They are old pages and the high rankings are indicated by my analytics software (I didn't personally see them)

The dance continues, seems like I am losing ranking for one set of keywords and gaining ranking for another set - but still not gaining ranking in the crazy-fast way that it happened last week
