    Hey guys,

Just did a Google search for my own website and I was ranked 4th in Dubai, UAE; a friend did a search and got me at 1st entry out of 99,000,000 others :D

Sorry for the thread, but is that good? I'm hoping so... any tips to move onwards and upwards from here? :p

Most websites will rank number one for their domain name. I did a quick search in Google, and it has no data for searches for the university kid. No data equals no traffic from that term.

For branding purposes your number one listing is good. But if you are looking for traffic, don't expect much from this search term.

I don't see any data for "the university kid" being searched. So it probably wont provide you with any traffic. Do some keyword research before you start targeting your keywords. To make sure the terms are actually getting searched.

I did a search at Overture.com for university kid and it brought up a figure of 117 for 'kid university'.

Anyways, I'd like to rank higher for the main keyword, which is the unique term 'Make Money Online'... :p any tips? :)

Yeah thats gonna be a much tougher one to get ranked for. There is lots of competition. Seeing how your site is brand new, and you dont seem to know much about SEO. I would say it will take you at least 2 years working diligently to get there - if at all.

If you are willing to put in that kind of time, than start reading everything you can about SEO. And get working.

If the domain name is an exact match of the query it gets an advantage in Google.

Google assumes that someone might be looking for a specific "brand".

If you have a brand called "Blue Widget Cars" your domain name is probably going to be bluewidgetcars.com (unless you are unlucky). Even if another site has optimized better for "blue widget cars" as a keyword phrase, bluewidgetcars.com is more likely to come up as #1.

If you want to see what your competition is, search for your keyword in quotes like this:
    "the university kid"

or to see who else is optimizing for your keywords:

    intitle:"the university kid"

I have you ranking #7 for global Google search. A keyword with exact match domain is something you should really be ranking #1 for.

You don't use an <h1> tag on your home page. Wrap your 'The University Kid' header with h1 tags and you should see immediate improvements in ranking for this keyword.

Two results; 26 if you allow similar but omitted results. It looks like you're competing with a hundred million other pages because all three words in your phrase are fairly common. But used together like that, not really ... in quotes but not the title, I'm seeing 627 matches. That's very uncompetitive; it's a nice ego boost, but not a terribly difficult one.

Title and h1 are the two most important tags in a document to major search engines ... that's the on page part of optimization. Anybody who's seriously targeting a particular word or phrase is going to put it in their title. That's a much better way to see how much competition you really have.

    So far

Is there anyway to check how well/poorly placed you are in the search engines for a particular term? If I wanted to check how well my site was doing for say 'University' , or 'Make Money Online'... obviously it won't be in the first few pages, so is there anyway to check if it's ranked say 100th, or 1000th?

Really the best way is your site's logs, or the analytics program you use. It doesn't tell you how well you rank, but that's actually not as important as what you'll find in there. Congratulations on the traffic, and here's to more of it ... but ranking #7 for a high volume keyword/phrase is better than #1 for something that doesn't get seen.

Still, I'm not trying to be hard on you. #1 isn't bad.
