I've just gotten the go ahead at work to try and improve our rankings in particularly in google. It seems to rank pretty well in msn & not so bad in yahoo, however in google it is pretty dire. I'm pretty new at seo, so would appreciate any pointers as to where to start: http://www.vantageit.co.uk (sorry can't link yet) One problem we have is the towns to cover - area specific, but these are only mentioned in image tags - how can I get better rankings for the specific towns, but preferrably not have them displayed? I guess i'm asking the impossible here.. I've been reading plenty round here, lots of info to digest I'd also appreciate any (constructive) thoughts on the layout/design of the website in general. Thanks!
The keyphrases I'm trying to taget would be along the lines of: computer support xx network support xx network maintenance xx Where xx would be an area specific town name (Aylesbury, Milton Keynes, Hemel Hempstead, High Wycombe)
Hmm it shouldn't be too hard to rank for those in Google, i'd start off by throwing in those town names into the content where ever possible without making it sound dodgey, and then submit to directories with multiple anchor texts including the town names in the anchor and descriptions..
It is not easy to get high ranking in Google for those terms. You are trying to beat the industry experts

Yes I had realised, however as I was hoping to pin point it down to location specific areas I didn't think it would be *as* hard, it's not like we are trying to compete nationally, but locally we probably have the most prominence over competitors. Just our website doesn't show this, as up till now most new business has been found via other marketing/referals. However I'm convinced a good website should do good for our marketing, being an IT company and all. Whilst I'm technical and do have some web programming experince, SEO experience is something I more than lack due to the fact I've never had to do it. But I like a challenge... Whilst the town names aren't really in the content, especially so on the main page I think the biggest drawback is backlinks at the moment. Maybe.
with a town name in, it shouldn't be too hard put town names into your page topic/description/key words
This is more like what I'm trying to achieve - I want it to be found via a town name, but don't want to display a town name on the page. I would've thought I was asking the impossible, and would certainly have a disavantage over a competitor who does list the town name on a page.
