Rank very well for Google; not for MSN or Yahoo

I was wondering if some one can help me out with this. One of my sites is ranked really good for Google but ranks very bad for MSN and Yahoo. I thought basically if you can get your site ranked well in Google, MSN and Yahoo will follow but it seems to not be the case. We are indexed in all of the search engines and we have had the domain name in use for the same thing for 13 years.

The strange thing is when i search for some terms i finally find them on the 5th-10th page but it's not even the home page that shows up, it's one of the sub pages.

I am looking at MSN webmaster center and everything looks normal in here. All pages are indexed and nothing is blocked.

Anyone know what the deal is? I'm assuming that Yahoo and MSN read the pages different that Google but how can you rank well for all 3?

This is typical... I see the same thing on my sites but never worry about it. Google gets 70% of the world's search traffic, so I always concentrate on ranking well at Google which is actually harder to do.

Yahoo! and MSN's ranking algorithms are MUCH less sophisticated than Google's. They seem to care more about quantity of links than the quality of links... Yahoo! is said to even give credit for links to your site w/ rel="nofollow" on the link.

So if you want to rank there then go spam blogs comments, submit your site to thousands of nonrelevant directories, spam forums w/ signature links, etc... Just be careful that what you do to rank at Yahoo! and MSN doesn't trigger a penalty filter at Google.

Personally I could care less about those engines... I focus on Google because I get the most bang for the buck there.

That is what I figured however the client wants to rank in those search engines.

I worry about doing things like that for the reasons that you mentioned, I don't want to lose our Google rank. I will probably try out a few things and also explain to them why the ranking is low in those search engines.

I had this with my site aswell, i experienced great google rankings long before i got any traffic from MSN or Yahoo, slowly though Yahoo is bringing me traffic.

Google is more important anyway, 90% of users search through it. Yahoo and MSN will notice you in time I find them alot slower.

Yea I think Yahoo! and MSN ride the short bus... :D They seem to be MUCH slower in reacting to changes on your site and changes to your backlink profile.

Yea I'm trying to decide. It might be important for this client to rank well in yahoo and msn since a lot of their customers are older. It seems older people are more likely to use Yahoo or MSN.

Are there any hard stats on demographics of search engines? Ages and/or locations?

Yahoo and MSN do care about quantity of backlinks, so you can try to get some more backlinks for your choosen keywords But i think eventually they are going to get your site ranked if it is ranking well in google. They are somehwat slow in their ranking process.

Well that is fine if it is your personal website and you don't care but if it is a client it works a little different. I can't just tell them don't worry about it. They will then go ask their friends what search engines they use and if just one of them uses either MSN or Yahoo then they will come back to me.

I found it very easy to rank on Yahoo and MSN WITHOUT all the SEO and Search Engine Optimization gimmicks. I will have to put some thought into this,

work on more back links and try social bookmarking

I wonder though, how long have you been actively working on SEO for this site? For some keywords and in some markets, "getting there" takes months, perhaps a year even.
