I was just wondering if any one of you fine SEO experts new if traffic would affect ranking. Is it possible for a site that is 99th in rank slowly move up based on it having hits by a increasing growing fan base or cult following?

    Thanks DP Dudes!

Yes,imo its possible that your serps can improve based on buzz/cult following especially when it leads to

1/ people searching for the domain/business name
    2/ people bookmarking your site
3/ high traffic, buzz and natural links being added

Speculation says that G tracks clickthrough's on searches, so it's possible that if the #2 listing gets more clickthrough's that it may move past #1.

    Very simple answer.

There are 100 websites in your category. For what reasons would a search engine want to recommend it??

Think about a new restaurant in town....if nobody goes there would you recommend it to a close friend, possible new client?

During Hurrican Katrina the Red Cross Website rose to the top of the rankings for the keyword "hurricane katrina"

How come? So many people went there that the search engines were forced to find out why...

Post disaster we know now the search engines did a better job responding than our government.....

Much as we love to hate Google Yahoo & Msn have to give them props on that one!!

Not much speculation needed. Vis a vis see post above, look back at presedential elections terrorist stikes, other natural disasters.

Next Google is measuring otherwise there would be no Google Analytics offering.

Many will say link counts do it....but unfortunately Google does not update links that frequently, nor trust them enough to be effected by spikes from them from other than valid news sources.

The spider does however sort of reside on the server and can tell when its being hammered for hits.

And it makes perfect sense for Google to measure traffic through clickthroughs.

    My two cents...

    I could be sane though..;)

Exactly, I was thinking something in these lines. Though I'm new, I had a head to head confrontation with an SEO expert on this. He said that traffic has nothing to do with ranking, but I begged to differ.

Again, it's been said many times that PEOPLE create algos not machines, so it makes perfect sense to me that if there is a great site out there but has no optimization done, but people love it, why wouldn't it get naturally ranked???

It would explain poorly optimized sites wiht barely no back-links ranking super high!

by the way, what is the definition of "clickthrough" and "serp"

Is there a difference to SEs between a "clickthrough" (I'm assuming is clicking on a link) and typing in a URL???

    I know, i'm still attending SEO 101

Clickthrough = click a link through to website.

SERP = Search Engine Results Page

The page a search engine returns when you do a query.

Clickthroughs as well as direct type ins are both measured in web analytics packages. Some will even show bookmark percentage.

    Hope this helps.

Dont worry about seo101 most of us are still there even the so called experts..

    Peace

    Thanks Advance!

    Your information is very helpful.

I was reading that therer is a company that is developing a search engine that ranks pages based on bookmarking popularity and user ratings. I'm thinking if I was Google or any of the large SEs, I'd definitely pass an extra point or two to a site that was bookmarked.

    It makes sense, right?

If you're searching for something, and you realize that the number one ranked site sucks, you get off ASAP. And if the second or third in place is good, you might bookmark it. This could have an effect in the overal ranking, at least that what I think/predict...

    Yes it makes perfect sense.

I read about the new engine which will draw from bookmarking. New idea.

    Glad I could help

    This is TRUE.

Google does keep track of click being received by sites in SERPs. And the site which received maximum or most click make Google think that the website is more relavant to the search keyword and then next time it ranks it on top.:)
