This quote is taken from Randfish of SEOmoz, for complete article see http://www.seomoz.org/blogdetail.php?ID=1214

This means that if you WANT to rank high in MSN.ca/Sympatico you have better changes to get those rankings if you get backlinks from Canadian sites. This can either be domains with a .ca extenstion and/or from sites with a general TLD but which are hosted in Canada.

Randfish only talks about MSN, but IMO it is important to have country specific backlinks in all major SE's. Think about it, everybody is always talking about how important relevant backlinks are, and aren't links from Canadian sites relevant if you want to rank in Google.ca, especially if they are topic related as well?

Now there is a tool that displays the backlinks of any given site and orders them by Top Level Domain, i.e. .ca AND lists the country of where the sites are hosted of general TLD's, such as .com, .net, .org, etc.

Just enter the domain of a competitor which already ranks high for your desired keywords in a local SE and try to get those country specific links!

The tool has been created by eKstreme of http://ekstreme.com/ and can be found here.

P.S. enter the domain without http://
