I was wondering, is it better to have links to a directory like movies/, or to the index file (movie/index.html), they both go to the same location, but is one way better than the other, or does it simply depend on consistency.

Pick one or the other then 301 redirect to the one you chose. Then make sure you build all your links to the one you chose. If you don't you'll split the link juice between both URLs.

 

Choose whatever you see when you get to your site, and stay with it. If you keep switching it around, then you will not get benefit from them.
