A bit of fasting, abstinence and soul-searching is good for everyone.

Provided, of course, that it is completely voluntary!

No, that would depend on your health condition and your pattern of living.

Fasting can actually kill some people.

Also, not getting enough nutrition in the body will quicken decay and kill more brain cells.

    Comprende?

And fasting by pregnant women leads to them bearing retarded children, particularly if they fast in the first trimester -- when they may not even be aware that they are pregnant.

    That explains a lot..

First, on a point of English/Italian/Spanish

    What is
To the best of my knowledge it means "Includes" on both Italian and Spanish and nothing in-particular in English.

    Now to the fasting bit.
Most doctors will agree that it is unhealthy to eat 3-4 hours before going to sleep.
A good sleep is considered to be 8 hours
That makes a total of 11-12 hours without food.

In the middle east (I will take my home town as an example,
Sunrise today was at 06:08 am today and Sunset at 07:19,
    in London Sunrise: 5:55am - Sunset: 8:10pm
and in New York Sunrise: 6:12am - Sunset: 7:45pm.

That makes Ramadan fast times 13 hours 11 minutes, 14 hours 15 minutes and 13 hours 33 minutes respectively - really no big deal!

In Judaism and in Islam fasting is forbidden for the sick and the frail. So what is your point?

    Some additional reading:

Some additional (and maybe irrelevant) information:
Most Muslims actually gain weight during Ramadan, that is because of the feasting at night!
My great great grandfather fasted twice a week, every Monday and Thursday. He lived to be 113 years old.

Maybe a little more soul-searching is in order?

    Run a Google search genius.

And most Doctors agree that malnourishing your body and skipping your regular eating cycle is bad.

Your body follows specific "cycles" and screwing with those for some special "fast" god prescribes doesn't make sense.

The point is that you're skipping the time the body is accustomed to eating. That's not good.
Most followers of Islam are forced to fast even though they're not interested. You don't have to be sick and frail to be discluded from something that is obviously not very good for your body.

There's plenty of news bits that say the opposite as well :p

That's a lot worser. It's like skipping breakfast and lunch; then, having a dinner which will give you the same kind of calorie value.

    It screws your body up.

My grandfather used get drunk everyday and lived to be a 100. So, being an alcoholic is good aint it?

    [/quote]

Throw out the books that were written when man still thought the world was flat and start reading the latest books :p

That would mean throwing out the Greek classics like Aesop, Plato, Homer, Marcus Aurelius . Or Arabic/Persian like Arabian Nights, Indian - Kama Sutra and other great works and instead reading "Mein Kampf", Das Kapital, Quotations from Chairman Mao, Jenseits von Gut und Böse, should I mention more?

I do like the modern scientific books.

And, I particularly think there's a lot of not so very good advise in the Bible, Koran, Torah, Zend Avesta and the Vedas.

The books you called "modern" were mostly single-author autibiographies, and what is wrong with reading the Mein Kampf? Hitler was a major goofball, but I think everyone should read his autobiography just like we'd read the one of someone like Gandhi.
