'Quoting' other blogs - etiquette?

I see a lot of blogs that copy posts from other blogs and give them a 'source' credit (especially tech related blogs).

What's the etiquette for doing this?

I write my own posts for all my sites, but have noticed more and more people copying my posts word for word, and ending up higher in SERPs than my site.

That pretty much is the etiquette. Give credit.

If you base your writings on someone else's you should credit them by giving them a link. You should never copy someone else's work verbatim unless you have their prior approval. You could get into all sorts of copyright problems if you do.

Just remember that giving credit doesn't exempt you from copyright laws.
