Hey all, I quit my job as an investment banker last week after 3 months on the job (which means I never got anywhere near receiving a bonus and just made a $60K/year salary for 3 months) and am now going into SEO with a friend. Am I crazy or what? Doe anyone else out there have a story about leaving a more "traditional" job and starting an internet business?
yes, you are crazy.... seriously, you are giving up a job that a) is stable b) has lot of room to grow c) girl likes to become a a) guy who work from home b) guy has unstable income c) geek
I'm not sure if you guys would be saying that if you knew that I was working 90 hours / week as an investment banker and making just over $100 a day after tax (not including July bonus which would roughly double that amount but requires a year of misery) - that comes out to about $8 / hour. I may make much less than that now (and in fact I'm pretty sure I do), but I am hopeful that some day I will make, if not comparable money, at least decent money and not work every waking hour of my life.
I say 'more power too you' ckelly - I know what its like to burn away at a corporate job, and I know what its like to nearly kill myself working 80-90hr weeks for a job that frankly sucks If you can make a living & be happy doing SEO & web work, go for it!
Do you or your friend have any seo experience, or will you be relying on digitalpoint forums to gain some knowledge quickly?
My friend is highly experienced in SEO. He's been doing it since 2003 when you could apparently make $15,000 / month with little experience and a small time investment. At least, that's how it was for him when he started. So I'm pretty confident that he knows how to make money in this game - the question is whether there are too many players for it to pay off.
The internet is young and full of opportunity. You made the right move. Do it now while you are young. I only wish I had done it sooner but I've been buying and running sites and its paid off better than any other investment. I am not yet at a level where I can walk away but I hope to do so soon. Good Luck
$15K a month with little experience is extremely rare in this game unless you have links to the mafia and they "arrange" work for you!
Now THAT is funny. However I would quit my job just as soon as the SEO stuff would pay much more than the job.
It dont matter what you do in my opinion. Bottom line to me is money as long as its made legally. Whether you are a investment banker, lawyer, poker player, forum admin... same shit to me. I am a full time derivatives trader and work from my home office as well. No point respecting someone because of their title. I know plenty of idiots working in reputable investment/brokerage firms.
I think that you should have used a bit of patience.........did you save a large amount of money before you quit the job? Did you sit down and weight all the factors? How high is you standard of living? How long can you live on the money you've saved, if you've saved any at all? These are not questions that I'm asking you to answer in public. But it is something you will want to think about.
