Quirky Domains and How They’re Used

Wow, even simple fruit names can spark big brand ideas!

 

Seventh part of my series on lexicon domains. I analyzed the current usage of 25 English (spelled out) number .com domains, and here are the results:

• 13 number domains are actively in use by businesses or individuals
• 8 number domains are up for sale
• 4 number domains are largely dormant, sitting parked, under construction, broken, redirected, or unreachable

I have only considered domains with key numbers that are spelled out and not numbers in numeric format. There have been some big sales of numerical domains, mostly to China—for example, 100.com sold in 2014 for 950,000 USD. The domain was actively used until 2021.

Especially, for investment metals such as gold, silver and platinum local TLDs can be a huge competitive advantage since they immediately show trust. In Germany and Switzerland all these domains are developed:

• gold.de
• gold.ch
• silber.de
• silber.ch

 

Generic domain names like australia.com lack specificity and relevance. When searching for information about Australia, no one instinctively types 'australia.com.' As a U.S. resident, I wouldn't think to search 'usa.com' or 'usa.org.' Generic domains often feel like traps for some irrelevant content filled with ads.

 

That's why the continent-based TLDs such as .asia and .eu are worthless. I haven't seen any useful, developed site using these TLDs. When I come across business sites using .eu or .asia (same as .biz and .info), I always think they are scam sites ;-)

For a tour operator working across a whole continent, the continent domains could be very valuable - not for the type-in traffic but the brand trust.

 

Eighth part of my series on lexicon domains. I analyzed the current usage of 9 English planet .com domains, and here are the results:

• 7 planet domains are actively in use by businesses or individuals
• 2 planet domains are up for sale

I counted "Pluto" as a planet though it is considered a dwarf planet.

Mars.com could become epic. Will Musk acquire it? Unlikely, but he claims Optimus could be on Mars by 2026, with humans landing there in 2028. Just a random question: Would you go to Mars knowing you would never return to Earth?

 

Ninth part of my series on lexicon domains. I analyzed the current usage of 28 English stone .com domains, and here are the results:

• 10 stone domains are actively in use by businesses or individuals
• 6 stone domains are up for sale
• 12 stone domains are largely dormant, sitting parked, under construction, broken, redirected, or unreachable

Tenth and final part of my series on lexicon domains. To better understand their current value and usage, I analyzed 52 English vegetable .com domains, covering both singular and plural forms.

• 17 vegetable domains are actively in use by businesses or individuals
• 16 vegetable domains are up for sale—with plural names disproportionately represented (12 vs. 4)
• 19 vegetable domains are largely dormant, sitting parked, under construction, broken, redirected, or unreachable

Besides animals and fruits, vegetables are my third most favorite type of brandable domains. I remember the sale of carrot.com and the domain is still in use. It fits very good to the brand identity of the company. Another popular vegetable domain is onion.com which redirects to theonion.com, an American satirical media outlet. I don't read it but heard about it several times, usually when quoted by other news sites.
