Do they really rank better on search engines like google? How and why? I thinking of buying one that I came accross (nearly 10 years old) for nearly a thousand.

Is the content on the domain 10 years old also? If not, dump it.

It used to work earlier, but no more. Google now compares the registrant history and assigns rankings accordingly. Lot of people are under the impression that by buying an old domain, they will achieve top rankings. But that's not correct.
