Quick question about choosing the right domain in regards to SEO...

    Hello all,

I have a quick question for all of you. Pretty sure that this one has been answered in a bunch of threads here, but I had a hard time finding the answer to my exact question.

In order to make this easy to read and understand, I will use a potential case scenario.

Lets assume that I want to make a minisite targeting a specific keyword...
My target keyword is "seo tips".

Now, I am sure that you would all agree that the best domain to do that is seotips.com . My question is what comes next?

Is it seotips.net? Maybe seo-tips.com? Or even yourseotips.com? I am using "your" as an example of any generic keyword that could be before or after your target keyword. How about .org or .info?

Furthermore, I am a domainer so I have a bunch of domains in my disposal. Again on the above example.... would it be too bad for my SEO if I use a domain such as superseo.com? Most of my domains are brandable but not keyword specific. How much does the actual domain matter? Would it be enough to just have part of my target keyword in my domain?

I have noticed that when it comes to Yahoo, having your keyword as your main domain give you a HUGE advantage unlike Google. Obviously, my biggest concern is the latter.

Would really appreciate your views on the above!

    Thanks so much!

An answer in the form of listing the possible domains in order of preference would be great :)

As long as .com is available go for it. You should check with sites like GoDaddy to see other available variations for "seotips".

However, you have it right, seotips.com would be the best for you because it will be exactly the same as your target keyword. You only have to deliver what both your target keyword and your domain name promises to be sure that Google or any search engine puts you on top of the SERPs.

The domain name plays a huge roll regarding ranking for the keywords within the domain. Google anything and look at the top listed sites. Most of the time one the top sites will have their domain name be the exact match for the phrase you searched on.

    Thanks for your advice!

However, my main concern here is what is the next best option after your keyword.com

Would it be your keyword.net or maybe your keyword + 1 more keyword.com? How does .org or .info compare to the other two options?

    Please let me know :)

I have found nothing wrong with .net, or .info domain names. I have all sorts and get great rankings. get as close to your keywphrases as possible. if you're selling bluewidgets and bluewidget.com is taken, but bluewidgets.net, or .info is available, buy it!!!

for seo purposes, both seotips.net and seo-tips.com would work the same. first one however would be better for branding. also, if you are a domainer, then you know that domains with dashes on them worth less in the domain market

Put aside the issue on the length of the domain. No matter what, I will still opt for .com as long as it has the relevant keywords that I want.

Domains which are easy to spell and remember are good.
