Quick question about backlinks

I was just sitting thinking about how I am going to drive backlinks to my site.

I will have a few useful articles, which I am hoping people (bloggers, etc) will link to.

The qestion is, does that mean that the PR of the linked page goes up, or the PR of my whole domain?

Basically, what is the scope of backlinks?

If you consider pages like geocities where they give webspace away, a user might have a nice site, that his friend links to. Will other geocities members then get a page rank boost for this totally unrelated action?

    Cheers.

The page getting the link will get a pr boost, and then it will spread pr to all the other pages it links too. I'm sure you'll have a homepage link on all pages, so it will trickle some back to the homepage as well.

    Aah, of course.

So I should really have a link to my site map on all pages? so the PR will eventually spread to every page on my site, regardless of which article was linked to?
