FTP = File Transfer Protocol.. It is used to transfer files from a computer node to another node or network over TCP/IP on port 21.

This is used commonly to upload web files to a web server.

I like to use FireFTP on Firefox for my ftp client or utility.. to transfer my web page files to host servers. It works great.

An ftp is needed to transfer files to the server. Most hosting control panels have a built in ftp function, but those generally only work with one file at a time. With an ftp program you can upload entire folders and as many files as you need (within the limits of your internet connection speed)

Coffe Cup ftp is a free program you can get that works just fine

I would suggest FileZilla. It is widely recommended and even tops some of the FTP programs that cost money.
