    Pary07,

If they continue to harass you make a complaint to the Banking Ombudsman. The contact details of your area Banking Ombudsman should be displayed in your branch OR just ask the manager and your problem will be sorted out immediately :D

You can also get the details from the Reserve Bank of India website:

I don't think a bank could charge a percentage that high!

I had two Cheques one of $47 way back in 2007 and one of $134 in May 2008. I deposited first cheque in IDBI Bank and it got cleared in 28 days and I got around Rs1622 in my account after deduction of Rs 400 from the Bank's fees. This year I submitted the USD cheque in HDFC bank and they charged me Rs 300 +38.6 as total Fees after clearance of my cheque.

They do charge a percentage if your check is greater than $1K but below that they charge a nominal Rs 300+ servicetax +Edu Cess while some banks may charge you up to Rs 1K for a cheque of $100 only. It's up to which bank you are approaching for clearance.

Till date HDFC has been cheapest in international cheques. So, go to branch once again.

SBI charged Rs 450 for cheques but one of my $$ cheques is still not chased to my accounts and it's already 4 months. On enquiring it says it cleared but due to manual error by SBI staffs here they wrote wrong acc no and money is hanging in bank.(I laugh because these things r manually done by people in this tech era) So SBI has worst service for $$ cheques and i complained this using their website today.

HDFC is best in this regard.
