I am planning to start a PHPLD directory. I have some technical queries: 1) How much space do I need to have with database for hosting? 2) If I hire a technical guy for installation and customization of homepage template or skin/adsense/adbrite layout & paypal integration (I don’t want to use identical templates), what is the typical charge? 3) If it difficult to operate directory? I mean adding new categories/approving links. What is the process? Do I need to upload files after adding new category/links? Sorry, I am asking too many questions as I am into online marketing not into programming.
Hello, 1. No you do not need to add any files for adding categories or subcategories, its just sql process. 2. Yes, its time consuming to add categories or subcategories, and do not be lazy to just use existent sql dumps , cause that makes your directory structure non-unique. 3. If you hire me for example to do the installation customization and stuff, will cost around 30-60$ or more depending on the complexity of the job. Not sure how much others charge though,so cannot comment on that. 4. Space : For start i think about 20 mb disk space and 2 mb sql space will be enough, but as time goes by you should atleast have maybe 15 mb or more sql space. 5. Oh yaa its difficult to operate directory if you have no time at hand to edit links or check the links that get submitted for approval in a proper fashion. Cheers and welcome to the directory world.
Two comments in addition to those already given: TIME: Running a directory takes time if you're going to do it properly - manually reviewing and amending submissions is a time consuming process, don't under-estimate the amount of time you'll need to spend on your directory. Add to this time to further develop your directory and you'll need commitment! TECHNICAL ASPECTS: Do as much installation, styling / programming as you can yourself. You'll want to work with your directory, tweak it and develop it, if you can do none of that yourself you'll find your directory costly and frustrating to run. Good Luck!

Each individual has their own price, but you got to look for quality and quality ones are a bit expensive i'd say a custom design like 300 - 800 range it depends on how many mods and stuff you get in there.
You can start with 25MB space and 500 MB Band width. you may get to 100MB and 2Gb to 3GB band width in the next few years. I get 1000 uniques/day on my www.ayhu.com It is not PHpLD - But all of them are approximately same. Have 50MB allocated and 2GB band width. As of now it is using bout 50% Band width. If you add images it is going to be a differnt story. Thanks
Don't forget to get in anon doing the mods for you before you launch your directory. A directory w/o his mods is just a Dir... well we need something special. And then start submitting to all well known dirs in dp. I can say overall a basic cost of about 800$ for a decent start.
Holy crap 300$ plus to code and mod the directory with existing mods ? Man i need to increase my starting price of 30$ to 300$ . Wow, never knew all these guys other than me doing coding are so expensive, good thing i learned how to code.
