Questions about starting a web directory.

    Hello people,

    I am new to the web directory stuff but I want to make one as I have an idea which will probably bring it high. However, I would like to know how do the Directories get PR and backlinks? For example DMOZ has a PR8 but how did it get that?


    Now about the script. Which free open source script do you suggest me? I need the best as it will be tweaked and there will be add-ons to it.

    I am planning to make it a free directory for the first year to see where it's going. If it's good it will start to be paid. Do you think it's a good starter idea?

    If you have more details and information that would help me as a beginner, I would really appreciate it. :)

    You should have read the sticky at the top of the forum. It answers most of your questions if you follow the links listed there -

    You get PR from link building but I'd worry more about the quality of your links rather than their PR. And I'd worry more still about having a solid, content rich directory in place before you even start building links. There's nothing worse than an empty directory.
