    It all depends.
    - Some SEO experts only do packages of services. You pay for the package, the work done, independent of the results. (This will work for a customer as long as he knows what he wants and just does not want to do it by themselves)
    - Some SEO experts work for a commissions. If you have a site selling something, you might contract an SEO expert to raise your sales. You then pay a commission per sales. (If you're not sure if it will work, you can try this. Your sales not up, you don't pay.) Also convenient because you do not pay excessive amount in the first few months when nothing happens. As an SEO expert it is not a very safe deal, since site owners might back out when sales is up. Strict contracts will have to be made.
    - Then there are a lot of SEO experts that just work at an hourly rate. Work is done like any other consultancy job. The SEO-er does some research and makes a plan, for which you pay a fixed price. After that you can choose whether to implement the plan or not. Hourly rates or a fixed price for the whole job. I have seen SEO-ers offering services for over $300 an hour.
    - SEO-ers also might ask for a bonus when goals are achieved.

Thinking of becoming an expert and offer your services? If you do not have much to show for, I'd recommend to go for one of the first few options. But with some good references, you could also ask ridiculously high rates to large companies. After all, Internet Marketing might make (or break) a company. Large companies are willing to pay hugh amounts for the #1 spot.

A paid SEO will make alot of promises and underdiliver in most cases. There are thousands of affiliate programs out there. If they were any good at SEO (like I am) they would realize that there are already thoudands of clients available.

As an SEO, we will do what ever the clients wants... Keyword, competitive Research, optimizing the page, analyzing traffic results etc. It depends upon the SEO in what way he/she will satisfy the client. As long as you show a good report, the client will be happy to sign up again in your service....

The seo charges includes on-page optimization, off-page optimization, paid directory listing, directory submission and google ad word campaign. The google ad word campaign is optional. If the client agree for it the seo start ppc campaign.

Right now i'm working on two clients:

1 - I receive from every sale he does.
2 - I will get paid ONLY if client gets top #3 + for some keywords. This is not the best but when i achieve this, the payment involves $$,$$$, so not bad at all :)

    Different clients, different aproaches.

    ;)

Hiring a SEO agency is a tough task but an important decision. You would spending significant amount of your advertising budget and you don't want to be getting insignificant results for the significant amount of money you are spending. By and large, working on set campaign deliverables ensures a healthy ROI but choosing a pay for performance could be the best choice. Be judicious in making your selection as all of them would be claim to be the best. If they can back it up with reports and references, then you have good reasons to choose them.
