    My site www.example.com has pr level 2


    but when it comes to example.com (no www) and example.com/directory etc. etc. the page rank is lost

    ???

    It's a common case. PR for www and without-www are usually different

    You can use a htaccess file to auto redirect everything to the www address.

    ya google assigns Pagerank to different pages on you website differently.
    so example.com has PR 2 and example.com/directory has 0 PR
    this is true forall big sites even blogspot.com

    that's usual, and you should decide where you want to link when gaining new backlinks.

    Google treats url with WWW and without WWW as two different URLS. SO its assigned different PR to them. Its based on Which one you are using to build links. With WWW or with out WWW

    also xxx.com and xxx.com/new are both diff pages so diff pagerank for them!
