Questions About Menu Placement

A couple of questions about websites.

    1. When you visit a website do you prefer the navigation menu vertically down the left hand of the page, or the right hand side? (For the purpose of this discussion I`ve not included across the top menus)

    2. More for webmasters- Is there any truth that the search engines look at sites from right to left, in which a menu down the right MIGHT be the better option (as far as search engines are concerned)?

    1. I think most users who visit website are expecting to find menu at the left side than at the right:
For example visit this two sites, they have the same menu but at different sides, and you'll understand what I mean:
    a) http://www.nwoods.com/go/mfcFeatures.htm
    b) http://www.securedmail.co.uk/home.html

    2. I've never heard of this, and really doubt that search engines look your design, I think they checking your code, and the code is written from top to bottom... (but as I said - as I know - there is no matter where your menu placed)

Yes, I must admit I think down the left is more pleasing to the eye.
