I'm trying to help some folks who have an old site that ranks fairly well and brings them a good percent of the business they're relying on. They struggled for years with a manual, html shopping cart and finally switched over to a dynamic cart service. They set up a new domain for it and are linking their orders over to there for now. They want me to pull it together, getting all their old content onto the new site. The first thing I questioned was the wisdom of dumping the old domain. I searched around and found a two year old article saying that 301 redirects are kinda sorta okay, but you'll likely lose some ranking if you do it. I'm asking the cart people what it would take to install the cart onto the original domain. I'll still have to rely on 301 redirects to send all the old pages to the new pages, but at least we'll still be on the old domain. I'd like some opinions from you all on how reliable you've found 301 redirects to be. The article is at http://news.stepforth.com/blog/2007/01/how-to-maintain-rankings-after-redesign.php
